The causes of back pain could be for a number of reasons but it can also be of no specific cause. Apart from colds, flu and headaches, lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people visit their doctors and it ranks second to the regular cold.

1) Lumbar Strain

One of the causes of low back pain is injury to the ligaments, tendons or muscles of the low back known as lumbar strain. The injury is classified as ‘acute’ if it has been present for days and weeks but also classified as ‘chronic’ when the strain lasts longer than three months. Injury ranges from mild to severe and usually occurs in people aged above 40 but it can happen to anyone at any age.

Some treatments for lumbar strain include resting the back to avoid injury again, relieving pain using medications, heat applications, reconditioning exercises and massages.

This condition usually occurs when the movement or the growth of the vertebrae reduces space for the spinal cord and nerves. A few common causes of this movement of the spinal nerves are due to the following conditions:

• Arthritis

• Spondylolisthesis

• Spinal stenosis

Other causes of lower back pain include:

  • Kidney problems

  • Pregnancy

  • Ovary problems

  • Tumours

Symptoms of Lower Back Pain

The most common symptom of backache is pain in the lower back usually affecting above the legs. Nevertheless, there are other symptoms of lower back pain. These include:

• Pain in the back

• Worse pain at night or in the morning

• Weakness in the legs

Lower back pain can be a sign of some health problems that would need serious attention from the doctor. The job of the doctor is to analyse and detect any fractures in the bones, infections or even tumours. The best time to visit the doctor is if you have suffered from an accident, fallen from a height that can be considered dangerous or if you have fallen over a few steps if your older than 50 years of age.

Other reasons you should visit the doctor or the emergency department if you’re suffering from low back pain include:

• Having a history of cancer

• Losing weight without effort

• Having a history of steroid use

• Body temperatures reaching over 40c

• Having a history of drug use

Treatments for Low Back Pain

There are many ways to treat low back pain. Some treatments may be more effective on a certain type of back pain than others. Some treatments include:

• Sleeping with a pillow under the knees

• Enough exercise for those suffering from acute back pain

• Ibuprofen

• Acetaminophen

Home Care

Home treatment for back pain is very common. Most people choose to lie in bed for many days hoping to relieve pain. However, a lot of studies have shown that resting in bed to relieve back pain is not a good idea at all. Instead of healing pain, it increased pain and caused people to find it difficult to return to their daily activities. On the other hand, those who rested in bed also had a slower recovery from back pain than those who stayed active while suffering from back pain. The reason why bed rest slows recovery is because it can easily weaken the muscles including the ones on the back which causes back pain to return after recovery. Although long periods of bed rest is not recommended, a short time in bed can ease pain for a while.

Instead of taking bed rest, you should keep your body active throughout the day to help reduce back pain. This can be very effective when you take medicine along with your daily activities.
